Endangerment

Picture
The northern swift fox is endangered because of habitat loss due to agricultural, industrial, and urban development. They are curious and have little fear of people, making them easy to kill. They are often killed by mistake during predator control programs that are meant to kill wolves.
In the 1900s, they were extinct in Canada. In the 1970s, Canada and the US started to breed and reintroduce the fox back into its habitat. By the year 2000, around 800 foxes were released, but Canada still considers the species endangered. Since they spend more time underground than any other fox, it is difficult to track them and the current number of northern swift foxes is unknown. It is illegal to disturb swift foxes in their dens.
