The northern swift fox keeps one mate throughout their lifetime. Mating season for northern swift foxes is in late winter to early spring. Gestation is 51 days long and the average litter size is about four or five kits. The swift fox kits are born underground. They weigh only about four ounces when they are born. The kits eyes' are closed for the first 15 days of their life, so they rely entirely on their mother. In the case of the mother dying, the kits may die also, or the father might try to take care of them himself. The kits disperse in the fall.
